VCU Health System's Performance Improvement department is searching for a full time Surgical Clinical Reviewer, Sr. The Surgical Clinical Reviewer, Sr. provides leadership, management, coordination and expertise to VCU Health System's participation in the American College of Surgeon's National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), providing leadership, facilitation and coordination of data collection/submission, data use and, alongside surgeon champions, to lead performance improvement to improve patient outcomes.


  • Leads and coordinates the daily execution of NSQIP program.
  • Supervises and develops program staff.
  • Designs and implements data collection and analysis methodology, maintaining data validity and reliability.
  • Interacts with patients as needed to obtain outcomes data.
  • Works with surgeons to use NSQIP performance data and benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Applies improvement science to design and implement projects to markedly improve patient outcomes toward our goal of being the safest and most caring health system.
  • Continually improves the program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or other healthcare related field
  • Current license in the Commonwealth of Virginia in nursing
  • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in the healthcare environment.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working in a surgical department in hospital, clinic, clinical research or similar.
  • Clinical chart review and data abstraction experience.
  • Experience using clinical quality data, i.e., pulling reports, analyzing and displaying data, interpreting data for clinicians.
  • Experience leading teams.
  • Experience independently managing and facilitating improvement projects and interdisciplinary teams with all levels of staff including executives and physicians in a healthcare environment;
  • Experience developing and making presentations to clinical audiences;
  • Previous experience using computers and software applications to include electronic medical records, the Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel – required; Access and PowerPoint - preferred), statistics and graphics.


  • Master's degree in health related field
  • Course work in statistics, in quality improvement, such as quality methodologies/tools (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA), data analysis, patient safety, quality engineering, and/or project management.
  • Fellowship in Healthcare Quality or Patient Safety
  • Experience as Surgical Clinical Reviewer for NSQIP, strongly preferred.
  • Pediatric clinical experience preferred, if there is not another pediatric experienced member of NSQIP team.
  • Experience as a manager, supervising daily operations of a team, strongly preferred.
  • Experience in quality/performance improvement and/or patient safety.
  • Database management experience.
  • Statistical knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Experience abstracting complex clinical data for clinical data registry, other than NSQIP.
  • Extensive experience with performance improvement and process improvement tools and methods, including proven track record of data-driven clinical improvement successes.
  • Project management experience.
  • Process improvement experience.
